"Liquidation!"

Could you explain exactly what surplus and liquidation items are? What makes this type of sourcing different to any other?

Surplus and liquidation items are merchandise that are sent to reclamation or distribution centers from various types of store chains. These are products that are either shelf pulls, closeouts, customer returns, recalled products or discontinued products and the like. These are categorized in various categories such as clothing, electronics, households, hard goods, soft goods and so forth. What happens is the retail stores will sell these to the reclamation or distribution centers for pennies on the dollar and they in turn resell these products to the end consumer for pennies on the dollar. This is where you can find great merchandiseand awesome deals to resell for profit.

The reason is although these could be new items, often they are used or damaged items, the stores need to clear them from their inventory to make room for other products as they only have a limited amount of shelf space. There may be several reasons they will remove these products from the store, but these types of products will come in all kinds of conditions usually and are available in all various categories.

Surplus and liquidation items are different from wholesale or drop ship items because wholesale and drop shipped items are new items which are obtained from a manufacturer or distributor source. Since these are new items, these will have a higher cost associated with them and much of the time will include warranties and so forth. Depending on ones business model and what someone is trying to accomplish, any of these types of product sources can be a lucrative source of product selling.

Do you recommend using online liquidation companies to find product? Or is it more lucrative to try and create your own deals locally?

That is a great question. You must always be careful when purchasing from sources you are not familiar with. I always advise people to do their due diligence and check out who they are getting ready to do business with. There are many horror stories in the surplus and liquidation industry especially online.

There are many frauds and scams that operate behind a nice looking website… and that’s all it really is. A website with great products at great prices to lure people in. Once you send your money in, you have no product in return. These are scammers who simply place a website and offer products and a bogus office somewhere. Once they operate for a short time, get the money, they close down shop and then restart it somewhere else.

There are way too many stories of people that have been scammed out of their hard earned dollars like this. In other words, if you’re dealing with someone online, make sure you check them out and if possible, try to visit them. Dealing with local companies is always a great option because not only can you visit them, you should be able to reduce the shipping costs, inspect the product, create personal relationships with the people you are doing business with.

There are many other advantages to dealing with your local market over online companies. However, if you want to get to the direct source of the major reclamation centers, you will need to deal with them online. This is okay because these are legitimate and reputable companies but will more than likely involve more costs if you cannot deal with them locally. Either way, make sure you check out who you are dealing with BEFORE you get involved with them.

How would you compare the profits from surplus & liquidation with those from drop shipping and regular wholesale?

Surplus and liquidation products can be obtained usually at a cheaper price than drop ship and regular wholesale products. This means that the profit margins will be higher usually with surplus and liquidation merchandise.

Drop ship and wholesale merchandise are usually purchased at a higher cost than surplus and liquidation items so there may not be as high of a profit margin on these types of products. That is why it is important to have a backend selling process and upsell process associated with your selling process.

Is there anything that sellers need to do differently when listing surplus and liquidation auctions to ensure that buyers are aware of what they are getting?

Just make sure to accurately describe the condition of the item. If it’s not new, do not say it is new. You may not get as much money for the item, but you will gain the loyalty of a lifetime customer and that goes much further than a few extra dollars. You certainly do not want to lose a potential repeat customer by not being honest about an item.

What do you think is the biggest mistake eBay sellers make when trying to source product competitively?

First, many people get frustrated when trying to source products. I often get emails from people expressing their frustration at trying to find merchandise to resell. Sometimes the frustrations are not from not being able to find product to resell but usually arises when they think you’ve found a product or supplier only to find that the products are selling for the same price or less on eBay than what you can get them for!

I have had several correspondences with people dealing with the same frustrations and I completely understand because I’ve been there. This was my same problem I had when I first started out. I remember scouring the internet, calling all over the country looking for legitimate suppliers and products to profit from on eBay only to discover that every time I thought I found something hot, it would be very difficult just to make my money back if I were to sell on eBay because there were already tons of them being sold for far less than what I could get it for ; (

People will find a wholesale list that are the supposed secrets of the Powersellers. What many of these "wholesale lists" are is just a collection of someone doing a Google search and typing in url’s, calling it a product and selling it. These are more likely a bunch of middlemen who are robbing you of profits because they are hiking up the cost of the goods. Not good for you.

Or…

the situation is although these could be legitimate wholesale companies, most people do not understand that there is a difference between wholesale and liquidation/surplus merchandise. I have found this to be a very common misunderstanding between these two but it is a very important point to learn if you’re going to get in the game.

If you are finding products at wholesale, most people on eBay are not selling wholesale merchandise, they are selling liquidated / surplus merchandise. There is a large difference in this and it is a very important one to understand. Even when sellers on eBay do sell wholesale merchandise, it often is to the point where they don’t make much profit on them because they have to be competitive with the other similar offers that are selling for less than wholesale. They are competing with sellers who are selling below wholesale costs.

Another common mistake is:

Not researching the market or the products they are getting ready to invest in. Often, people will buy a pallet load of merchandise without having a clue if it’s going to be profitable or not. They don’t know if the market is saturated, what the condition or status of the product is, or what the competition is. They buy without knowing their profit margin. Often, many people will buy without having a clue what type of product they are buying.

Further, most people do not understand how to buy products, let alone to sell them because they have no plan to buy and no plan to sell. They don’t educate themselves before they get involved.
