Thinking Beyond Ebay with Wholesale and Surplus Products! |
One of the common mistakes I find with people selling on eBay or through any other forum for that matter is being self limited. People will often try to find a source of product to sell on eBay and profit from the individual sale of that one product, and then turn around and do it all again with a new listing and a new customer. That is fine and just, however, this is a very self limiting perception of how eBay or business in general works.
If you’ve ever been to McDonald’s or your favorite restaurant, your waiter or waitress has asked you if you would like fries with your order or if you would like some side dish… better yet, after your dinner, they say, would you like dessert this evening?
That is an upsell. I was just at a restaurant last week and the waitress asked if I would like a cinnamon roll to take on the go! Of course I wanted it and almost bought it because she asked, whereas I never considered it until then, even though I saw it sitting there… and it sure looked good!
Well my point is not to talk about what an upsell is, but my point is I often get emails from people who have purchased my book, "THE "ULTIMATE" INSIDERS SURPLUS, LIQUIDATION & WHOLESALE BUYING TO RESELL FOR MEGA PROFITS GUIDE"
They look through the awesome resources in it and will find the niche they are looking to get into. After reading the book, one of the most common misconceptions is cleared up when it comes to reselling on eBay, and that is the difference between surplus products and wholesale products.
If you’ve been a reader of mine for a while, I have previously touched on this to clear up this misconception. The book clears this up in detail.
Most products on eBay are not wholesale products, they are surplus and liquidated products that come from the major reclamation centers that most major department stores liquidate their products through. This means that these are closeout, liquidated, wholesale and discount products that are sold to companies, surplus dealers or individuals who then sell these on eBay. These products are purchased for cheaper than what you can buy wholesale products for because they are sold for a percentage on the dollar depending on what product category they fall into.
This means it will be difficult to compete. BUT… this does not mean you should not consider selling wholesale products on eBay if you have a niche you would like to promote. For instance, I had someone recently send me an email saying they found a product that they sourced from my book that is selling like crazy on eBay. It is however, a wholesale product which means the product is new, never used, and in perfect condition. Remember, eBay is a race to the bottom. Prices are low enough there in most places already but when you’re competing with surplus items, it will be difficult to make a lot of profit for it to be worth your while to sell certain items on a one by one and relist model and then repeat it to do it all over again.
Remember, it’s always easier to sell to an existing customer than it is to find a new one. Remember, the restaurant example, would you like dessert with that? Well, the reason is because it is easier to sell to you because you’re already in the restaurant, you’re already a paying customer, and the effort is to sell you something else because you’re already at the point of sale. Plus, with the great service, you’ll be back again!

By the way I do talk about this in Surplus 2 Profits!
I also talk about all this in detail in my auction selling training information site.
If you find yourself in this situation, here is what you need to do:
1. You’ll need to do some market analysis. How much is the product selling for on eBay, how much would you need to sell it for to profit from etc. ?
2. Think BEYOND ebay. Chances are people may already be selling the same products from the same source on eBay as their primary selling model. Use eBay to sell it with a goal of making a profit, BUT also use eBay to capture your customer base. In other words, capture them so you can sell to them either on the back end, or sell them your products outside of eBay. That is how you will maximize your profits. And then after you do that, you can also promote backend products such as digital downloads or informational material or simply other products. It all depends on your market.
One other thought is if you are also looking for even a cheaper source of supply, you can refer to the www.thomasnet.com and look under your keywords that are similar. I found some extremely cheap products there from U.S. companies. It’s definitely worth checking out and sourcing through.
Think outside the box and don’t be limited to just trying to list stuff on eBay, (unless of course that is your model you want to follow) but speaking from experience, when you develop a customer list and you don’t need eBay, then that is where you can really excel and profit especially when you’re getting products for pennies on the dollar from sources in my book!
Not only will I give you the sources and information on How and Where, I also will tell you how to find merchandise yourself! Plus you’ll also learn how to think BEYOND eBay.
You will have instant access to over 700 sources as well as the reclamation centers directly that almost every seller goes through in the industry. Why go through the middleman when you can go direct?
Plus, you’ll also discover my free newsletter course to teach you a system on exactly how to sell the products you just purchased. I’ve covered all the basis for you. All you have to do is apply it!
